[edit]It have to be Discussed. Wich Name to use for Mtkvari River. By my point of view, As we are talking about Georgia it's Better to use Mtkvari Name.
Hydropower
[edit]I removed the statement claiming that most hydropower is generated in Georgia. I never heard about hydropower at the Kura in Georgia and in the section below only Mingachevir is mentioned, which is located in Azerbaijan. However, feel free to correct me if I am wrong. --Kerres (Talk) 13:13, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Is a link between the people living near the river Kura (Kur) and a tribe kurshi (kuronians-curonians-couronians) in Baltica sea area?

[edit]The Curonians or Kurs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curonians
"The Curonians or Kurs (Curonian: Kursi; German: Kuren; Latvian: Kurši; Lithuanian: Kuršiai; Estonian: Kuralased; Polish: Kurowie) were a people living on the shores of the Baltic sea in what is now western parts of Latvia and Lithuania from the 5th to the 16th centuries. They gave their name to the region of Courland (Kurzeme), and they spoke the Curonian language. Curonian lands were conquered by the Livonian Order in 1266 and they eventually merged with other Baltic tribes participating in the ethnogenesis of Latvians and Lithuanians. Direct descendents of the Curonians include the Kursenieki of the Curonian Spit and the so-called Curonian Kings of Courland."
"The Curonians were known as fierce warriors, excellent sailors and pirates. They were involved in several wars and alliances with Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic Vikings. Grobin was their main center during the Vendel Age. Chapter 46 of Egils Saga describes one Viking expedition by the Vikings Thorolf and Egill Skallagrímsson in Courland. They took part with the Oeselians in attacking Sweden's main city Sigtuna in 1187. Curonians established temporary settlements near Riga and in overseas regions including eastern Sweden and the islands of Gotland and Bornholm.
The Curonians were an especially religious people, worshipping pagan gods and their sacred animal, the horse. Some of the most important writing sources about the Curonians are the Rimbert's Vita Ansgarii, the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, the Livländische Reimchronik, Egils Saga, and Saxo Grammaticus's Gesta Danorum."
The Curonian Split

"The Curonian Spit (Lithuanian: Kuršių nerija, Russian: Куршская коса, German: Kurische Nehrung, Latvian: Kuršu kāpas, Polish: Mierzeja Kurońska) is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast located in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and southeastern Lithuania."
The Curonian Lagoon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curonian_Lagoon
"The Curonian Lagoon (or Bay, Gulf; Russian: Kуршский залив, Lithuanian: Kuršių Marios, Polish: Zalew Kuroński, German: Kurisches Haff) is separated from the Baltic Sea by the Curonian Spit. Its surface area is 1,619 square kilometers (625 square miles).[1] The Neman River supplies about 90% of its inflows; its watershed consists of about 100,450 square kilometers in Lithuania, Belarus, and the Kaliningrad Oblast."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courland_colonization
"The Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (Latvian: Kurzemes un Zemgales hercogiste, Polish: Księstwo Kurlandii i Semigalii, German: Kurland), a vassal of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, being small but wealthy took a modest part in European colonialism, in West Africa and the Caribbean."

The old legend from Latvia
- I had an old legend in Riga about the time as a a cock (a cock - петух - on Russian, a hen, a chicken - курица on Russian, куры (on Russian): cocks, hens, chikens. they have as a hair style... as especial. Russian words "hohol" for Ukrainians was from the old ukrainian hair style. So, the old lettish legend is about a time as a cock on the high chirch will ask all latvians:
- Are you ready? ... and if a answer was "yes" ... it will a time for a biggest flood, which will cover all Riga and Latvia.
I mention this old legend as there "kur" - "tur" had teh acciation with with old lettish(latvian) legend about The End Of a Life from a biggest flood in this area.
The old legend from Sibir, Russia, from family, connected with Kurushin family.
The old Russian legend from Sibir about the End of a Life on the Earth is:
"It will be time, and every person will afraid to meet another peroson on his own way. *as some people will eat each another* It will be a hungry hard time. and plenty wars. And the last battle for all Mankins on the Earth will be between the river Bia (Biya) and the river Katun in Altai, Sibir, Russia) and nobody will survive alive in this last battle."
This old legend had remind words "kur-tur"... and they coming from as a resource from family connections with "Kurushin" family. and as they may be connected with places as "The Tur river" and "The river Kura" and a tribe curonians (kuronians), (The curonian Split, The Curonian Lagoon), I decided to mention this information, for a future lingovistic and folk search.
It would be intresting to save all family legends from all Kurushin family and people, whom may be connected with curonians, and the river Kura, the Tur river to look if they had similarity. Some curonians as people from Courland might be Americans for centures already.
But if people had moved so many times before in the history of mankids, we may have the some suddenly wish to travel and to move again as an oldest traditional instinct, in the human nature.
There genetic maps of migration, they may will help too. as some people as birds. some birds like to fly and some people like to travel.
Biya River http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biya_River
Biya River "The Biya River (Russian: Бия) is a river in the Altai Republic and Altai Krai in Russia. It forms the Ob River as it joins the Katun River. The Biya River is 301 km long; the area of its drainage basin is 37,000 km². It flows out of the Teletskoye Lake. The river freezes up in the mid-November to early December (some parts of the river freeze over on a year-to-year basis). It breaks up in the early or mid-April. The Biya River is navigable up to the town of Biysk.
The maximum depth of river is 28 feet (8.5 m)." http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%B8%D1%8F
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katun_River
The Katun River (Russian: Катунь) is a river in the Altai Republic and the Altai Krai of Russia. It forms the Ob River as it joins the Biya River some 19 km southwest of Biysk. The Katun River is 688 km long, the area of its drainage basin is 60,900 km². It originates in the Katun glaciers on the southern slope of the Belukha Mountain. The river freezes up in the late November - early December and breaks up in the early or mid-April. The Katun River has a few tributaries: Argut River, Chuya River, Koksa River and Sema River. The river is navigable.
I think... all these places and rivers may be connected,
the river Kura (Kur) - the Tura (Tur) river the Biya (Bia) river - and the river Katun
kurshi- and the people whom had lived near the river Kur (Kura) and Tur (Tura) The Curonian Split The Curonian Lagoon
Russian worlds "Ну, и накурочили!" на-кур-очи-л-и (Russian -кур- - [kur])- na-kur-ochi-l-i

– 1. The normal convention for European rivers is "Foo". 2. "Kura" appears to be several times more common than "Kura River" on google books. 3. "Foo River" implies "River" is part of the proper name which IMHO it isn't and 4. looking at the disambiguation page for Kura this is a huge river that appears to be the primary topic amongst those just named "Kura". For all these reasons and for simplicity I suggest we move this to "Kura" and move "Kura" to "Kura (disambiguation)". --Relisted. — Amakuru (talk) 10:20, 20 January 2015 (UTC) Bermicourt (talk) 14:11, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose. I checked the page view statistics. This article does get more page views than any other individual page in the Kura disambiguation list, but it's not dominant enough to qualify as WP:Primary Topic to claim ownership of the base Kura page title. If the concern is that "Kura River" improperly makes "River" part of the name, this page could certainly be moved to Kura (River). Alsee (talk) 17:13, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Mtkvari
[edit]Why isn't this (mainly) Georgian river designated by its Georgian name, Mtkvari? Is this a pro-Russion anti-Georgian name? Wikipedia should be neutral. Rbakels (talk) 11:03, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- First because it's not mainly in Georgia - only about a fifth of its course is in Georgia and secondly (and more importantly) the most used name in English is Kura, which is the main criteria for naming rivers and other geographic places. Kostja (talk) 12:16, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

Etymology
[edit]The whole thing about the puropted derivation of the name Kura from some Megrelian word is entirely bullshit. It quite obviously derives from the Ancient Greek "kuros" which goes back to Old Persian. 109.172.170.213 (talk) 21:22, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
discharge figures
[edit]The current data seems inconsistent, as for somewhere upstream of the Aras confluence the figure 378 m3/s is given and for downstream of the confluence 443 m3/s. However the Aras alone has an average discharge of 285 m3/s at his mouth and at least roughly one would then usually expect (378 + 285) as the downstream figure, which way beyond the stated 443 m3/s. --Kmhkmh (talk) 17:11, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- P.S.: Also note that German article gives completely different discharge figures albeit for slightly different locations.--Kmhkmh (talk) 17:14, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
